Advising

All students in our major are required to come in for advising once a semester. Your first semester you will meet with Deni Ruggeri, Coordinator of the BLA program, and Diana Cortez but in later semesters you will be assigned a faculty advisor that you must meet with. You can view our general advising procedures, including the list of assigned faculty advisors, on our Advising page. A lot of the questions you may have may already be addressed on our Advising FAQs page. Please make sure to read it to answer any questions you may have. If your question is not listed there, or need clarification, please make sure to contact us!

It will be helpful if you come prepared to your orientation meeting with a list of classes you are interested in taking this upcoming semester. You should also verify to see if all the courses you wanted transferred over have come in. Don't forget to have the latest copy of your transcript sent to the University! This is especially important if you have completed your Associates degree.

Here are the basic steps:

  1. Complete a schedule request form to indicate which classes you need. If you are using Google Chrome or Internet Explorer you should be able to fill out the form online. Otherwise, you can download the pdf and should be able to fill it out that way.
  2. Print out schedule form.
    1. View your unofficial transcript.
    2. You can perform a Degree Audit by clicking here. If you are a transfer student, this may help you see how your classes have transferred over. If you have any questions please let us know during your advising visit.
    3. All students are required to fulfill either General Education or CORE requirements. You will find more information on your General Education requirements here. If you are a CORE student you will find more information here. If you have completed your Associates in Maryland it is important you have this verified by sending a transcript to Transfer Credit Services. More information can be found here: http://www.tce.umd.edu/.
    4. Four-year plans are also very helpful. For the latest version please click here.
    5. To view all the courses offered on campus you will visit Testudo's Schedule of Classes.
    6. Don't forget to visit our Advising FAQs page as well! You can also check out the Registration Guide provided by the Office of the Registrar. This guide contains information for all students regarding registration procedures and policies.
  3. During orientation, your faculty advisor will handle exceptions, answer unique advising questions, and discuss your progress, goals, and academic direction.
  4. Your Schedule Request Form will be reviewed.
  5. Advising blocks will be removed and you will be able to register for classes.
  6. To register for classes you will do by visiting the Registration Drop/Add and Schedule Adjustment page.
  7. Please let your advisor know if you are planning on dropping a course. This might have an impact to your time to graduation so it is important that you discuss this with your advisor prior to dropping the course.

Are you ready for advising? We look forward to meeting you!
